Bunda Street Refurbishment - Public Consultation [Feb. 1st, 2009|08:22 am]

Bunda Street is a key, high use pedestrian link in the City. The infrastructure is aging, unattractive and diminishes the look of the City. The recent expansion of the Canberra Centre on Bunda Street serves to highlight the poor condition of the adjacent public spaces. Design work is to commence shortly on this significant project. The design will be based on the standards set through the Canberra Central Design Manual.

Territory and Municipal Services is consulting and providing information for interested members of the community via this website. For more information, check out the ACT Govt TAMS website for details on the Bunda Street Refurbishment Project.

Public Consultation

Coffee Review: Yogo & Mango [Aug. 24th, 2006|03:30 pm]

I'm hoping to recruit someone other than me to give coffee reviews of the cafés in Canberra, but today I visited Yogo & Mango and I just had to share...

THey have big, large tables that give you ample room to read a paper, pull out a lap top or to use one of the reversi or chess sets that they have available. So if you're looking for somewhere to have a meeting for six people or more, this is the place for you!

They have space for a live band, although when I was in, they were just playing the radio (Mix106.3). The volume was a little loud, so I'm not sure how good it'd be over a conversation (but I'm sure they'd turn it down a little if you asked).

I ordered a Chai Latté and damned if it isn't the BEST coffee I've had since taco_lad opened my world up to how good coffee can be.
- actually, I'm hoping to convince taco_lad to be the person that does the coffee reviews.

A good coffee shouldn't need to have any sugar added to it. It should be smooth and creamy, and this coffee fits the bill, with just a hint of cinnamon from the chai.

OMG!!! Everyone needs to visit Yogo & Mango when they're in Woden next to try one of these amazing coffees!!!

Breakfast Review: Caffé Della Piazza. [Aug. 21st, 2006|11:30 am]

Caffé Della Pretentious Piazza.
... So named because of the pretentious people that go there, and the pretentious attitude of the owner (or so I'm told). Note the spelling of the name.

They boast that they are "Canberra's Most Awarded Caffé"(sic). They are fully licensed with BYO bottled wine.

I'm sitting at one of their tables in stiff collared white shirt and pinstripe peddle pushers, so if nothing else, I'm looking the part.

I should point out that before I came here, I purchased some Nurofen (ahh Nurofen, how I've missed you!!!) because I had a bugger of a head ache that was making me feel nauseous.

Layout: Inside and outdoor seating. Cold metal chairs but the sunshine is nice. Magpies busk for food, which makes a nice change from the pigeons because at least they sing for their supper.

Situated in Garema Place, the fountain nearby makes me feel like I'm in a square in Itally, rather than in sunny Canberra (no really, despite it being winter, the sun is out with a bright blue sky. The only cloud are some light whisps on the horizon.

Music: The music has been a range of "hip, disco/jazz". The song that is playing now is the first song that I recognise. I feel like I'm at a fashion shoot rather than having breakfast. It's kinda cool.

Gluten Free Options: No specific items.

Staff: Friendly and on the ball. If I want to be picky, it would have been nice if he could have taken my coffee order while I was looking over the menu. He did however put a glass of water down moments after he gave me the menu, so I guess it wasn't that bad.

The staff were very accommodating, but it was difficult to get their attention. For example, when I noticed my order was missing something, it would have been nice to have got them to get it for me on a side plate to have while I was eating, but since they were never around...

Features: The atmosphere is very specific, and really lovely. Despite it being surrounded by other cafes that litter Garema Place, Caffé Della Piazza has a distinct feel about it. I think it's the fountain. : )

The Menu OK, to me this was strange. Della has two breakfast menus, one for weekends and one for during the week...Collapse )

My Order Eggs, over easy, clarified that I wanted runny yolks that would explode all over my plate like molten lava. Bacon, chipolata sausages (assuming they're wheat-free), della's home made baked beans (if they could do it since it was a weekday) and mushrooms.

Price: $9.50 for the bacon and eggs (normally eggs and toast, but I think they gave me the bacon instead of the bread), $5.00 for the beans for a total of $14.50

Allergy Death: The Waiter picked up on my need for Gluten free when I asked about the sausages, and clarified that I wouldn't want any bread/toast. I love it when the staff are cluey. : )

Did They Get My Order Right? Sadly, no. They missed the mushrooms all together, and there were no sausages. I thought this might have been because they weren't wheat-free, but when I looked at my docket, neither the mushrooms nor the sausages were on it.

Breaking it Down...Collapse )

Total Cost: $17.80 for breakfast + coffee.

My Rating: 3 Stars (for the baked beans. Would be more if it wasn't so pricey).

Breakfast Reviews [Aug. 17th, 2006|11:49 am]
News & Reviews of the Cafés in and around Canberra

[mood |hungryhungry]

I've just returned to Canberra after spending a year in the USA: the land of shite coffee and shite cooked breakfasts.

How I have missed cooked tomato, cooked mushrooms, baked beans that taste good, and orange juice that when it says, "freshly squeezed" on the menus, actually means that it was squeezed from oranges in the back in the food prep area, not poured out of a container that says, "freshly squeezed".

I'm making it my goal to visit all the cafés in the CBD of Canberra, and to post a review of their cooked breakfasts.

I should also point out, that I have a wheat and cow milk allergy, so part of my review will include if they tried to kill me or not.
